Hey, I’m Ramsey. I shoot mainly black and white photos because there’s something kind of magical about stripping an image down to its bones. No distractions, just light, shadow, shape, and story. Don’t get me wrong I love color, it has its place when it adds to the photograph I just appreciate the simplicity of the B&W image.

I grew up out in far West Texas, where the desert has a way of teaching you to notice the little things—like how shadows fall across a cracked sidewalk, or how an old barb wire fence leans just right in the evening light. Out there, there isn’t a whole lot going on, so you learn to look closer. That’s what I try to do with my camera: look closer.

I’m not really into big, sweeping scenes with fifty things going on. I like the small stuff—the forgotten corners, the chipped paint, the expressions that happen in between words. I think that’s where the good stories live. Also, I have an ongoing love affair with shadows. They’re moody, mysterious, and don’t require a lighting crew.

Photography, for me, is part art, part therapy, and part “let’s see what happens if I crouch in this weird position for ten minutes.” I’m just out here trying to make honest images and not pull a hamstring in the process.

And when in doubt, I try to live by this bit of wisdom from Ray Wylie Hubbard:

“The days I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, I have really good days.”

– Ray Wylie Hubbard, “Mother Blues”
